Norma stanoví základní potravinářské názvy a určuje jejich význam (vymezuje pojmy). Z oblasti terminologie výživy jsou normalizovány jen některé názvy, těsně souvisící s potravinářským názvoslovím. Účelem normy je odstranit nejednotnost názvů a pojmů. Česky a slovensky je uvedeno názvosloví. Česky je definováno cca 150 hesel. Pro informaci jsou uvedeny ekvivalentní názvy v angličtině, francouzštině, němčině a ruštině. Norma také stanovuje názvosloví některých kvalitativních znaků (jakosti) významných pro hygienu výživy, popř. pro metody jejich zjišťování (ověřování). ČSN 56 0000 byla schválena 27.9.1968 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.7.1969. "Změnou a)-4-5/1979" se s účinností od 1.10.1979 v normě mění text asi 14 článků a nově zařazuje cca 18 hesel
