Tato norma specifikuje verzi 2 společného protokolu informací managementu (Common Management Information Protocol, CMIP) používaného entitami aplikační vrstvy k výměně informací managementu. Specifikace zahrnuje procedury pro přenos informací managementu mezi aplikačními entitami, abstraktní syntaxi a pravidla kódování pro CMIP, procedury pro správnou interpretaci řídicí informace protokolu a požadavky na shodu implementace s touto normou. Protokol CMIP podporuje společné služby informací managementu (Common Management Information Services, CMIS) stanovené v ISO/IEC 9595.
