Tato část ISO 6520 bude sloužit jako podklad pro přesnou klasifikaci a popis vad ve svarech. Typy vad jsou definovány společně s vysvětleními a v nutných případech i s vyobrazeními, aby se zabránilo jakémukoliv nedorozumění. Metalurgické vady zde nejsou zahrnuty. Jiný systém pro označování vad podle ISO/TS 17845 je přijatelný. Příloha B uvádí vztah mezi stávající klasifikací vad podle ISO 6520-1 a systémem označování podle ISO/TS 17845.
